December 9th and I am still not done with holiday shopping ... what was I going to get my mother in law again?
That's right, the book I saw on Epinions .... the one I meant to order ... I never ordered it!
In a fit, I clicked back to the review I had read of The Best Recipies From the Backs of Cans, Labels, and Bottles - looked at the choices of where to buy, and clicked on Amazon.com first. Quickly I found out from the site that Amazon.com could not guarantee my book order would arrive by December 24th - I quickly clicked to the next choice - Barnes & Noble.com.
I love the actual bookstore, and have searched through many of their actual stores for this book with no success. Free Shipping if I buy 2 or more items and send them to the same address - even better! I quickly ordered the book (on sale for $12.00), a money funds book I knew my husband wanted, and a $8.00 subscription to SELF magazine. Under $35 total, shipped to me for free - what a great deal!
I simply searched for the title of each item, added each into my cart, and went to checkout. I had ordered some coffee from Barnes & Noble.com last year, so I quickly was able to type in my password and pull up my mailing information. Enter my credit card number, and VIOLA!, I had an order. The site did let me know that my orders may come in separate packages, depending on which warehouse each book was housed in. They also let me know not to expect my magazine subscription until after the first of the year. That night I received an email confirmation that my husband's book was mailed, the following morning, I received another confirmation that my mother in law's book was also being sent out. Each email was sent with a UPS tracking # and link so that I could track where the package was.
4 days later, I had both books. Perfect! All set for the holiday.
But wait ...
The book mailed to me for my mother-in-law is ripped across the dust jacket - I can't give this to her like this! I quickly emailed the site and explain my problem. I am emailed back that I can mail the torn book back to Barnes & Noble.com and they will replace my book. Thanks, but this won't help me with getting the gift in time and I am a little upset that I'd have to pay to ship this book back to the company, when I had received free shipping in the first place! I politely email back that this was not the ideal situation for me. Within 2 days I had a polite email and a reply that this site was sending out, the very next day, a new book. There were also sending a Media Mail postage paid label that I could use to return the torn book. My credit card would be charged for the new book, and then my card would be refunded the money of the old book once it was received back to their office.
What else could I do BUT to trust them?
3 days later I had a new, unripped book to wrap and quickly place under the tree. 5 days later I received the Media Mail postage sticker, as promised. A week later I mailed back the package, paying nothing for shipping. Both shipments of this book appeared on my credit card.
2 weeks later I received an email from Barnes & Noble.com that they had received my shipment. The following day my credit card was credited a refund of the entire payment.
I could not have asked for a better transaction. I was so impressed with how Barnes & Noble.com handled this that I plan on looking to them first for book orders I may need to make in the future. They offer competitive prices, good deals, a wide variety of materials, and have been more helpful to me than most online sites I have shopped with.
Barnes & Noble.com, you have a customer for life.
** Please note, I cannot get the bottom line box to show up on any time I try and edit this, so I cannot change where it says TBA, nor do I know how it got there. **
