I have been shopping at Barnes and Noble for as long as I can remember. I loved them when I was going through the store, browsing and buying good books to curl up with. I hated them during college when I thought they were making a lot of money selling me text books but giving very little back for those same (very gently handled) text books at the end of the semester. Now that I no longer buy text books, I love them again but now I can love them in the store and online too.
I really do prefer shopping for books in the store. I like looking through the aisles, I like the smell and feel of books and now that most stores have a few chairs around, I no longer have to sit on the floor to really get a feel for a book. I love that too. However, work and everything else intrudes and sometimes online shopping is best for me. No matter how hard I try, if I am in a book store I just can't go in, buy a single book and leave. It's impossible.
In the past few weeks I concluded two separate transactions with Barnes and Noble.com and I was very pleased with both experiences.
The first transaction consisted of buying CDs for my brother-in-law's Christmas present. I wanted to get music that was written by a particular composer so I went to the music section and typed in the name and got a list of CDs. From there I went through my choices until I found the music pieces I wanted. I probably could have done it by music piece but wanted to see everything from the composer.
When choosing the CDs I wanted I was able to click on the title and get information on what what on the CD as well as the musicians playing.
After choosing the CDs I wanted, I checked out. I was lucky enough to have no shipping charges with my order since B&N was offering a deal with no shipping if you bought two or more items. If I had wanted my merchandise overnight I would have paid for that.
With that taken care of I had to fill in credit card and address information and then I was done.
Similarly, when I ordered two books about a week later, I typed the titles into the search area and up they popped. I added them to my basket and checked out with no problems (and once again - no shipping charges).
Both my packages arrived in a timely fashion and well packaged against damage.
While I will always prefer going to the bookstore, Barnes and Noble is a great option when I am trying to control my book buying impulses. That fact that it is convenient is just gravy!
