Lisa_J's Full Review: John Gray - Children Are from Heaven: Positive Par...
As an advocate for positive parenting, I adore reading books aimed at increasing childhood exposure to positive reinforcement. Considering that I am an in-home child care provider/preschool teacher, mom of two daughters, public school volunteer, and childrens ministries volunteer the opportunity to utilize these skills is immense.
So, when I happen upon a publication like Children Are from Heaven, excitement abounds me. Any tasty nougats I may add to my wealth of positive parenting knowledge, are gladly welcomed.
I did not hesitate to purchase a copy of Children Are from Heaven during a recent shopping adventure at our local Wal-Mart. We were browsing the book section, when my eyes happened upon this book. The phrase on the bottom front of the book Positive Parenting Skills for Raising Cooperative, Confident, and Compassionate Children summoned my hand. Rapidly I clutched this paperback book, not caring the price or surrounding merchandise.
Silly as it may be . I was so excited to venture into the text, that when my youngest daughter requested to look at the toys, I quickly obliged. Perhaps, in what was the quickest descend to Toyland, we strolled onward. I plopped myself down on the tile floor and began to read one eye on Missy, one eye on the book.
As if I needed confirmation to buy (not), I skimmed the contents, and other points. It was clear that the subject matter contained in this publication agreed with my previous childrearing related book adoration.

Psychologist John Gray cites a need to shift from "fear-based parenting" (a punitive and oppressive approach to child rearing) to "love-based parenting" ..
Well known Psychologist John Gray --1992 Men Are From Mars, Women Are from Venus brings us a tasty serving within the 357 pages of Children Are from Heaven . We receive compassionate guidance to help improve communication with our children, increase cooperation with our children, and ways to motivate our children.
The methods suggested have previously been presented by some authors as positive discipline but the prominent difference in Children Are from Heaven, occurs through the incredible ability that John Gray exhibits through utilizing relevant new-millennium issues such as overscheduled parents/children, and a consumer-driven society. I found this to be a major attribute to this book.
Mr. Gray accurately tells us that when parents learn what children really need . We realize TIME is the key issue Time to enjoy family unity.
Now, my honest opinion is that Children Are from Heaven is well written, presented marvelously, and a must have. I quickly give it a 5 star rating, and will be maintaining this publication within my permanent in-home library. As much as I appreciate this book, I will caution you that I don't feel there is any book that is 100% applicable for every family unit.
My copy already has many earmarked pages, highlighted sentences, penciled in notes, and post-it® tags. No, I will not be parting with this jewel. In fact, I will be recommending it to my day care families, and friends.
It excites me to find information in this text that supports my theories toward child rearing, and adds to my knowledge bank. I admire the positive approaches this author suggests, and adore the massive amount of helpful information laced throughout every page. He uses terms I am familiar with such as the active child. Specific examples are provided for engaging cooperation and they work!
Another admirable attribute is exhibited with the inclusion of a quotation statement on several pages. Some of my favorites:
It does no good at all to focus on a childs mistake.
Children are never bad, they are just out of control.
When children feel understood, they automatically connect with the maturity of the parent who is listening.
Active children need lots of acknowledgment for their successes and forgiveness for their mistakes.
Positive parenting practices seek to create cooperative children, not obedient children.
The keys to positive parenting are the five positive messages your kids need to hear throughout childhood:
its okay to be different
its okay to make mistakes
its okay to express negative emotions
its okay to want more
its okay to say no, but remember mom and dad are the bosses
