| benchpress's Full Review: Nh Frankfurt Morfelden |
When I am in Frankfurt for business, I usually stay close to the office in Langen at this Steigenberger hotel on Robert Bosch Strasse (see my review http://www.epinions.com/content_403475107460) for the convenience and close proximity. I recently had to visit Frankfurt on short notice and my trip coincided with a number of large conventions taking place near the area. As a result, I ended up staying at the NH Mörfelden just south of the Frankfurt Am Main airport.
Location: Mörfelden is a small town due south of the airport, next to the main artery A5. The hotel is located less than 1 km from the intersection of A5 and 486. With its dramatically lit exterior walls and stylish motif, the hotel seems oddly out of place in the middle of a bunch of industrial lots. However, the distance between the airport and hotel is less than 15 minutes by car. The hotel offers regular shuttle service to and from the airport on a 30-minute basis.
There are some free parking spaces in the front of the hotel. There is a paid parking garage under the hotel and it cost 7.50€ a night when I stayed there.
Main Lobby and Reception: The hotel is 6-storey tall in a wide V formation. The main lobby is spacious and constructed in the typical NH style. To the left of the sliding doors is the long reception counter in chrome and espresso. Directly ahead is a bank of two very small elevators. To the right is the large restaurant with a substantial seating capacity.
My check-in was efficient and pleasant as it was expedited with the NH customer reward card. Customers enrolled in the NH reward program are issued a smart card upon which address, phone number and other vital information are stored. Without the card, the guests will need to spend a minute to complete a registration card during check-in.
The Rooms: There are two types of rooms available at the NH Mörfelden. The standard rooms are quite spacious, with a queen bed, large work area, a dressing area, and a moderately sized bathroom. The upgraded rooms offer more elbow room and a larger bathroom.
The furniture and décor were typical NH, lots of espresso colour and clean lines. Since the hotel is in the middle of an industrial area, it could get noisy in the morning with a lot of tractor trailers traveling nearby.
The overall impression of the rooms and hallways, though clean and well maintained, was a little on the tired side.
Food: The room service menu was limited, offering the usual NH hotel culinary items such as goulash soup (served in a bread bowl), burgers, club sandwiches, and pasta dishes. The portions were generous and the service was very prompt.
Breakfast was served buffet style and it was included in the room rate. Though not spectacular, the food was fresh, plentiful and generally tasty. The wait staff kept the coffee flowing and serving trays topped up.
Since the hotel is situated in the middle of an industrial area, you do need a vehicle to access restaurants in the surrounding area. Next to the private Egelbach airport in the southeast, there was a very nice restaurant by the name of Check Inn that served unusual, albeit slightly expensive, dishes (e.g. Weiner Schnitzel of fawn, roasted rabbit legs, etc.). Further to the west off Westendstrasse was an Italian restaurant called Incontrol that served succulent yet moderately priced traditional and fusion Italian dishes.
Amenities for Business Travelers: The desk/TV stand was large enough to accommodate a laptop, a phone, some files, and a room service tray simultaneously.
High-speed Internet was available via in-room Ethernet port. Guests could either purchase the regular service for 24 hours at 17€ with limited bandwidth (clocked at less than 100KM/s) or at 22 Euro with 1MB/s transfer rate. Like a lot of other hotels in Europe, the Internest service provided was very expensive comapred to the US. However, even the lower speed offering was fast enough to do email and retrieve most attachments. The faster package was fast and NH offered a satisfaction or money-back guarantee.
Fitness: There was a really small fitness room on the 6th floor amongst the conference rooms. It was equipped with 1 treadmill and 1 stationary bike. There was, however, the all important steam room in the fitness area.
Fortunately, there is an in-door soccer arena directly across the street from the hotel. For 10 Euro a day, I was able to use their small weight room and cardio room. It was not World Gym but it had free weights and a bench for benchpress - you really cannot beat the location.
Summary: At over 230 Euro a night in the middle of October, this hotel was a little more costly than the Steigenberger. However, the NH Mörfelden is a great hotel for business travelers. It knows its clientele and it caters well to it. If you are looking for a family hotel, there is a Holiday Inn Express just down the road on the 486. I wish I had discovered this hotel sooner. I believe the NH Mörfelden has usurped the Steigenberger as my favourite hotel in Frankfurt when I am there for business.
