Who could resist this cover picture? A close-up of a blue-eyed little boy looking down at a toy tractor. It seemed a little babyish until we peeked inside! The story is a very cute make believe story that children adore! My daughter was fascinated and yelled out "He is real!". Surprises abound in this tale of a father and son secret about a toy tractor. Although this story would be great for any time of the year, it is even better around fall and Halloween. Read on for why...
A little boy finds a toy tractor in a box and his father said it used to be HIS toy tractor as a boy. With a twinkle in his eye, he won't reveal the secret but assures his son that he will find out soon. The little boy plays with the tractor, imagining farming in his room, then goes to bed. He wakes up to find not his rug but dirt! The farmer on the tractor has been busy all night long and is still working! Planting the garden in the little boy's room. As he watches a system of vines grows all around until a big yellow flower blooms. Once the flower falls off, the boy is sad but then a vegetable grows in the same spot.
Each time he looks, it has doubled in size! Finally it turns orange and almost outgrows his room! It is huge! Soon the whole town has heard of this giant pumpkin and comes to see it. They suggest that he take it to the fair. (These people look like toys and dolls, not people.) But first how to get it out of his room? It won't fit through the door! The farmer takes off a wall to get the pumpkin out then hauls it to the fair where the boy wins first prize for the biggest pumpkin. The boy rushes home and finds....the carpet is back in his room and the toy tractor is missing. His father said not to be sad, this is what happens, and it will turn up again as it always does.
This 28 page book has the most elaborate illustrations! In full color, they are so realistic that I think I recognize the boy's father! The vines grow in his room in square formation, not wild as vines usually grow. They look more like pipes to me! My daughter said "Wow!" about all of the vines growing like a rollercoaster all over the place! Of course she also wished for a tractor just like the one in the story too! Even though most objects in the story including the people resemble toys and dolls, I wondered why the pumpkin had a turnkey in it? At the end of the story, you can see all of the crowd are just toys sitting on the boy's shelf. This story has three to fourteen lines of text per every other page. A fun imaginative story that children will love! Recommended for ages 5 and up.
