Pros: Strong, comfortable, maintains shape well, easy access for a "top loader"
Cons: No actual ice ax loops. compression straps configuration a little odd.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this pack for all seasons for day climbs and hikes where you want to carry 10 to 20 pounds.

| jimjuliem's Full Review: Camp Trails Blackjack I Backpack |
Although heavier than my Go-lite backpack of similar size, it is much more durable for climbing. I have used it on probably 50 climbs and I don't treat it kindly. It has held up to the test. I really like the long front zipper for getting into the pack without dumping every thing out, especially if it rains. The size is perfect for winter day snow shoe trips and three season climbs. Probably a little small for overnight unless you are a minimalist. The "X" shaped compression straps were a little odd, I thought, so I did a little cutting and sewing so they now go all the way around the front of the bag and attach in the center. I can now strap my snowshoes on the outside of the pack. The loops that look like ice axe tool loops on the bottom of the pack in photos are actually excess strap from the tiedown straps. The specs were wrong about that. I added an ice axe strap to the bottom. Mesh Pockets tore a little and were easy to hand sew for a quick repair. One little personal note, this pack is 99% black. That is okay with me, but it isn't pretty or easy to spot at a distance which is sometimes handy when climbing in fog.
This pack isn't water proof, but I don't believe many, if any are. Put a large plastic bag in the bottom of the pack to use if it rains. Keep your dry clothes in a separate bag. Weight listed is 3lbs 10 ounces, and that seems about right. Capacity listed is 2725 to 3281 cu. in. That is about 45 to 53 liters. I'm 5'9 and it fits me well and seems to have plenty of adjustment left for someone larger. Price was good for a solid climbing pack.
