Cons: Lots of ads, mostly photos, poorly organized, visual explosion
The Bottom Line: Does your mind like the stimulus of dozens of high energy pictures thrust in the covers of what poses as a gossip rag? I didn't think so.
They should perhaps call this magazine STAR Photo magazine, because for the most part US Weekly is a magazine dealing in the publication of glam and glitz of the Hollywood elite. I didnt see any of us in there. (He sits back and laughs heartily.) With the look of People magazine, the stories of Entertainment Tonight, and the photography reminiscent of Look, US Weekly magazine is a magazine specializing in the social networking of glamorous stars. From looking at their fashion to who is on their arms, to stories about their children, the magazine gives a great deal of press to every minute detail of a stars life.
A Few Publishing Facts- Very few
Janice Min is the Editor in Chief of the glitzy magazine. Various other credits for reporting and photography are in small print throughout the magazine, but there is no publishing page in the magazine or at their online site at www.Usmagazine.com. When one first opens the magazine, the articles and the ads start immediately. It is not until one gets to page 25 (I am looking at the May 19, 2008 issue) that there is even a table of contents. It is done with a smattering of photos and a brief blurb to tell you what you are about to read (or in some cases, have already read).
The photography of the magazine is pretty slick with plenty of paparazzi pictures included with what is obviously session shots or red carpet shots. With magazines like US Weekly, one can understand why the paparazzi are so out of control. Celebrities cant take a walk on the beach, kiss someone, or even hug their kids without someone talking a picture.
That the magazine, and others like it, are able to stay in print is testament to the inability to saturate the public's desire to know everything there is to know about every celebrity regardless of how mundane it is. Since when is it noteworthy that John Mayer has changed his hair style to look like Michael J. Fox. Huh? Who really cares!
Let's take a tour
So in the edition that has sent me into sensory overload, there are articles on (here we go) Rob Lowe being sued by his second nanny, Uma facing a stalker, Ashlee Simpson, Leighton Meester, Jason Taylor, Barbara Walters new memoir, Dourdans arrest, Mayers new tattoo as well as the new do, polls on all the major issues of today (yeah right), Nicole Richie, sexy mini dresses and the stars wearing them, quotes from the stars, Brads move to France, Mariah Careys wedding to Nick Cannon, a ton of hot pics (their words not mine), a Jen and Jon update (my life is complete now), the Iron Man premiere, the baby shower for Jamie Lynn Spears (baby, I forgot to get you something, how about a how to book on raising children), the feud involving Heidi, Spencer and Lauren, and what was actually a fairly cool article about Robert Downey, Jr.
And in the 104 page weekly magazine with all of this photography, there were 39 pages either completely filled or partially filed with advertisements. While this is somewhat less than in other magazines, the ads are done in such a manner that sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between the print articles and the ads. The magazine sells for $3.99 cover. Even if you got it down to $2 by subscription, I cant see paying $106 a year for this magazine. And I sure wouldnt pay twice that for it. If you watch Entertainment Tonight, you will get most of the news you want about the celebrities. If you go to the US Weekly Magazine website, you will see most of the pictures. So why would one want to buy this? I dont have the foggiest.
