Amazon.com is one of the biggest sales sites you can buy anything from on the web; Therefore it stands to reason that you will most often find whatever you need and more while browsing their site.
For the Buyer, Amazon is pretty much like a worldwide flea market. You can buy from their actual amazon company and get the product new, or you can choose to by it new or used at a possibly lower price from an individual seller. Just as on Ebay, there are consumer reviews from other people who bought from the sellers to let you know how reliable the seller is in getting the items to you. This can be very helpful so its a good thing to pay attention to. Amazon handles all the transactions so there is no need to worry about opening an account with a 3rd party site such as Paypal in order to buy anything secondhand. One thing to keep in mind is that if you order directly from the Amazon company you can expect your item(s) to arrive pretty fast, while if you order from an individual seller, you usually have to give it 5-7 days(unless you have the option to speed up the shipping- which not all sellers might offer)
Several helpful options they have is to create a wish list, find other wish lists that others you might know have created and creating gift lists. Based on what you have listed on these lists, amazon will bring up other recommendations that you or another might want that you might not have thought about otherwise. This is a GREAT tool for Christmas shopping, birthday shopping or whatever your need is.
What you intend to buy also has a factor in how satisfactory you find their selling website. I've bought a medley of books, games, cds, computer equipment along with useful household objects. If you don't mind buying textbooks used, you can usually get a pretty good deal on them. Non-textbook books however, can be gotten as cheap as $.01 depending on what they are about and how much in demand they are. CDs also, can be this cheap- however with cds you are running the risk of getting one that might be scratched if you buy them used. Its best to check the return policy. "No Returns" on an item like that might be fishy. Recently Amazon opened a Grocery section where you can order groceries online from them. I haven't gone further than browsing them though because I find the prices to be little better that can be gotten at the local grocery store and shipping is an extra cost.
Individual Sellers can profit well from using Amazon Marketplace for their online stores, or even just selling old books and things they aren't using anymore. Again- no go-betweens are needed to handle your transactions because Amazon takes care of that completely. If you're selling something for less than 5 bucks though, you might want to consider the selling fee that amazon charges per item sold. They don't charge a listing fee, just a percentage fee of the transaction. If you're selling a 3 dollar item, you might only get 1.80 out of it. It all depends on how much you're selling. The customer pays for shipping of course, but all the shipping fees are flat fees, and sometimes the amount you get for shipping won't exactly cover it all. It all depends on what you're selling of course.
Overall Amazon is a great place to go for an average shopping or selling trip. They have all the bells and whistles to make you a happy customer and many easy to use tools to help you sell what you need.
