| grandgram's Full Review: Omaha World-Herald |
Following several years of planning, study groups. Construction of its new Freedom Center Publishing, Plant the new OMAHA WORLD HERALD has arrived. A $125 million production plant built in a downtown location had an open house for the public to view these new facilities of their newspaper on Sunday August 26, 2001. On this Sunday edition of the paper they included a full flyer that explained this new Freedom Center as their endeavor to reaffirm the newspaper’s commitment to serving the Midlands of Nebraska and Western Iowa.
The first new issue to be printed and sent to subscribers was on September 1, 2001. When the paper came to our front door we thought someone left us another newspaper by mistake. It was our same favorite OMAHA WORLD HERALD but an entirely different look. The only thing not changed was the familiar old script printing of its name at the top of the front page. The first thing to notice was the beautiful color printing, clear and distinct. The old color prints where off centered sometimes where a person’s eyes never matched the exact position they should be located. The printing was more easily read and new sections were added to the paper with a different layout.
FRONT SECTION
We have had this new OMAHA WORLD HERALD for a few days and are still getting used to the many changes. The news is up-to-date with the main section filled with local, national and world news, so we are informed of events happening. Today’s edition covered an article about the local Boys Town services to National news of thousands claim to be over 100 years old to World on Northern Ireland upheaval. Many other articles are filled in this section.
MIDLAND SECTION
The Midlands section includes Nebraska and the region, with the weather and the editorial pages. The editorial pages are similar to the old printing with letters to the editor and editorial writings. We are given a balanced review of both conservative and liberal leanings. Many say that the OMAHA WORLD HERALD leans to a more conservative thinking that is fine with me, but they do give both views, as they should. Their editorial cartoons are not as liberal and mean as the Des Moines Register that leans to far to the left.
SPORTS SECTION
Our favorite section is the Sports section, since we are big Nebraska Football fans we want to read everything we can about the team. The new printing of the newspaper makes excellent pictures covering the football games. The beautiful red colors of all the fans, players, flags and balloons make excellent excitement of the games are covered in this Sports section. We are also interested in golf, baseball and other sporting events and they are all covered well in the OMAHA WORLD HERALD sports section.
LIVING SECTION
The Living Section is one of my favorites because it has the crossword puzzle and it is one of the first things I do after reading the other section. It is a good way to wake up the brain to get ready for the day. This section also covers the Television programs for the day along with articles dealing with television. The comics, horoscope and advice articles fill this section. They usually have a human-interest article leading this section and today was a good article about one of Nebraska football coaches Turner Gill and his family. Stating that his family ranks No. 1 with him and tries to spend as much time with them as possible. Excellent coach, former quarterback for the team and I would predict that he could be our head coach some day.
BUSINESS SECTION
The last section is the Business section and this area is full of information on stocks, businesses and articles concerning economic news. This section featured an article on retailers nervous about slow down and poor sales listing the communities and the percentage of the drop in sales. They usually include the Internet news and the Want Ads are also found in this section.
SUNDAY EDITION
The Sunday Editions are filled with more coverage of Careers and ads for jobs, plus Motor News with ads filling this section. There is one thing that has increased and that is the ads and fliers for many businesses plus the Magazine booklet. The one section that was changed was the Arts and Entertainment booklet it is now a section the same size as all the rest of the paper. I miss this booklet, as it was so easy to do the Sunday Crossword puzzles as it was always in the back section of this booklet. That is a small complaint as the whole new look of the OMAHA WORLD HERALD is a much better newspaper.
FREEDOM CENTER
This new Freedom Center is huge all glass enclosed 5 stories with a state of the art printing facilities. They had many articles explaining all the planning and people involved in construction and design. The Press was built in Germany and they used a German Crew of thirty who helped install and train the staff of the OMAHA WORLD HERALD. This newspaper has 116 years of service to Nebraska and western Iowa, they are locally owned and continue to be the newspaper people trust and rely on.
I feel maybe in some small way I was a part of their study for this new publication. Several years ago I had a phone call from the OMAHA WORLD HERALD that they were coming to Carroll to get a feeling of what types of coverage we liked and changes we would like to see them incorporate in their newspaper. I asked my neighbor to attend with me as she also subscribes to the OMAHA WORLD HERALD. We were invited to an evening presentation with a dinner and then given a chance to tell them just what we liked and disliked about the paper. I think for this reason this newspaper gives western Iowa great coverage in their paper. This is a much better service than we get from the Des Moines Register as we sometime think they don’t know we exist. It was nice to be a part of this study and know they cared enough to come to Iowa and meet their subscribers.
