I agree with everything you said and with Tom's praise, but I'll toss in one little twist.

If you have a card that rewards certain purchases (e.g., groceries) and you pay in full when the bill arrives, you can rack up big points. I typically don't recommend people charge groceries since many carry a balance, but if you're paying the bill every month, this can be profitable.

Amex's Delta card offers this type of program, and I know I've seen it in others.
