Baking Soda- The perfect exfoliator

Apr 30 '02 (Updated May 03 '02)

The Bottom Line Baking Soda is a cheap and effective facial scrub that leaves you with nice and soft skin.

If you've read through my previous reviews, you would that my skin sucks. No, I'm not being hard on myself. Just listen. I have extremely pale skin that is oily and has large pores. I have very sensitive skin. I suffer from acne. I have a very ruddy complexion. I'm the product of every bad trait skin-related from my parents. I hope that I don't pass my skin onto my future children (unless I just decide to have kittens. That might be safer). I've gone to the dermatologist beginning when I was thirteen. Throughout the years I've gotten wise enough to realize that birth control pills can be a big help, but there is no one topical cure that can grant me a clear face. And so, I've learned to just deal with it.

Of course, I'm now in my twenties and still suffer from breakouts. However, I can't go about treating these the same way I did when I was young. Living in South Dakota exposes you to two different elements: dry and bitterly cold winters and hot and humid summers. There is rarely ever an in-between. This has left me with a face that is oftentimes oily and dry at the same time. Using the usual acne treatment leaves me with dry and scaly patches. As if I didn't already have enough to worry about. I was told by my dermatologist that a great way to smooth out rough skin was to exfoliate.

I've tried every type of exfoliator out there. I was either left with burning skin, dry skin, or both all at once, thanks to my sensitive skin. Yikes! I picked up a book entitled "Beauty, The New Basics" through Amazon.com and they suggested using Baking Soda as an exfoliator. What?! I know that Baking Soda has multipurposes, but I had never thought of using it on my face...

I grabbed the box we had in our cupboard and headed to the bathroom. First I removed my makeup with a gentle makeup remover but I didn't towel off my face. I poured out enough to fill the palm of my hand (Probably about three or four tablespoons to be exact). I then added about a teaspoon of water, and rubbed my palms together. Not adding enough water will leave you with a scrub that has the consistency of flour. Adding too much water will leave you with a scrub that has liquified. The best consistency is one that resembles brown sugar. I then applied the scrub to my dampened face and worked it around in gentle circles. I exfoliated for about one minute, and then rinsed off.

After towelling off, I touched my face. It was nice and soft. About an hour later my face was completely dry and I touched it again. Still soft, no tight dryness common with other facial scrubs.

I have been using Baking Soda as an exfoliator for about four months now and it's great. I no longer have to deal with dry patches in the middle of my forehead or on the sides of my nose. I don't have to worry about dealing with a facial scrub that is going to make my skin feel like it's burning off. I use it about twice a week and I'm left with nice and soft skin. The best part is the fact that Baking Soda is very cheap and one box will last you a very long time. So the next time you're at the grocery store, pick up an extra box and scrub away!
