| alanmak's Full Review: Rolex GMT-Master II 16710BLKBLK Wrist Watch |
I purchased by GMT II nearly three years ago from a local authorized dealer. It is the stainless steel model with the all-black bezel.
My previous daily-wearer was an Oyster Perpetual, which was inherited from my grandfather. By the time it got to me, the 30+ year old watch looked pretty beat up. However, after sending the Oyster back to the Rolex service centre in Toronto, the watch looked brand new! It wasn't cheap (about US$400), but it was totally worth it. I digress from review of the GMT because the Rolex service and support of a rather old model was a pivotal to my decision to splurge big bucks (for me) on a current model.
My GMT came with the complete original packaging, including the outer cardboard box, the ubiquitous green presentation box, papers, tags and polishing cloth. I would strongly recommend that you keep EVERYTHING. Should you ever wish to sell your watch, having the complete original packaging greatly enhances the resale value.
As expected of a Rolex product, the GMT II is extremely durable. I have worn my nearly daily for the past two and half years, from pushing paper at my day job to swimming in oceans to working on my car. I even wear it when I'm golfing. It's still going strong.
I have not tracked its accuracy lately, but I suspect that the watch may have deteriorated from when it was new.
Given my activities, the steel band is fairly scratched up. In fact, I found that the band is quite easily marked. I'm not too concerned with this, as the scratches will be buffed out when the watch is serviced. Contrary to common criticisms of the Rolex sport watches, I've never had a problem with the buckle/clasp. It is quite secure.
The durability of the bezel has surprised me. The paint is still clear and shiny. I had expected more battle scars by now.
If you are considering purchasing a Rolex off Ebay, I would urge you to exercise extreme caution. There is no shortage of fake rolexes out there. Unless you know what you're doing, it is easy to get fooled. Watchtime ran an article two years ago wherein they tested so-called experts on real vs. fake Rolexes. Some fakes fooled the experts; they could not be distinguished until the case was opened.
I fully expect to enjoy the GMT II for many more years, and hopefully pass it on to my grandson. :)
