| pippadaisy's Full Review: Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner |
Hey, I'll admit it: I hate cleaning. I will gladly buy any product on the market that promises to help me do it faster, easier, or best yet, for me. Such was the allure of the Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner. Our city was one of the original test markets for this product, which promised to not only keep my shower clean once cleaned, but clean it for me, all with the touch of a button. Who wouldn't buy it?
::: The Spiel :::
For a retail price of somewhere in the $25.00 to $30.00 range, you can get yourself the Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner Starter Kit, which includes the spray unit, TWO bottles of cleaning fluid, four "AA" batteries, and the hanger for your shower head. All you have to do is insert the batteries, open a bottle of fluid and insert, snap in the wire hanger, hang the unit on your shower head, and you are ready to use it.
The concept is simple: take your shower as you normally would, and when you finish, press the button. A quiet beeping tone sounds for 15 seconds, giving you enough time to close your shower door or shower curtain, and then the nozzle at the bottom of the unit rotates 360 degrees, spraying the fluid all over your shower. You don't have to spray, scrub, or do anything other than press the button, close off the shower, and run.
For best results, you are supposed to use the Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner once a day, while the shower is still wet, after the last shower of the day. According to the manufacturer, it is safe for most bathroom surfaces, and can be used with both standard tub/shower combinations as well as standing showers.
::: One More Piece of Junk in My Bathroom :::
Not only was this product supposed to keep my shower cleaned after it was scrubbed, but "within 14 days should visibly reduce existing mold and mildew." I live in a pre-1960 house with one bathroom with NO exhaust. In the winter, mold and mildew in my shower are a recurring problem, simply because the surfaces stay damp with no fan to help dry things out. I get tired of scrubbing my beat-up old tile and tub, and was looking for anything that would help out, especially since I was pregnant at the time.
I dutifully set up the unit, which I will admit, was very easy to assemble and use. I was gleeful, and reminded my husband that all he had to do was press the button after his shower and I would give him credit for "cleaning" the bathroom. Since our shower curtain and area right around the faucet were particular areas of concern, I paid careful attention to those areas over the following four weeks or so, until I had to change out the bottle of cleaner.
I was excited, and ready to write my Epinion. While the grout still looked icky, the shower curtain had improvement! I called my husband into the bathroom to show how well it worked, at which point he rolled his eyes and told me he was sick of my "experiment" and had sprayed regular bathroom cleaner on the curtain and rinsed it off because it was nasty.
Oops.
We then cleaned the heck out of the shower with our trusty friend Lysol Mildew Remover with Bleach and tried the Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner again, thinking maybe our level of grime was above and beyond most normal folks' bathrooms with things like shower wall units and fans. Once again, the level of mold and mildew crept upward slowly, with no help at all from the shower cleaner.
Ultimately, I had paid close to $20.00 (after a coupon) for something that not only didn't work, but prevented me from hanging my handy shampoo and soap holder from the shower head. And I got yet another lecture from my husband on buying things because they sound good. But hey, at least I got to write a review.
I have to really give pogomom a huge hug and thank you for really going above and beyond the call of duty to get this dud added! It took almost six months, but she never gave up hope!
