smoke0845's Full Review: Jack Daniels 'Old No.7' Whiskey
I've read Epinions guidelines on deleting and re-posting a review. Mine's has a 100 word difference, so it's postable according to the Epinions guidelines.
I've tried just two types of whiskey, Jack Daniels and Jim Beam.
Slash of Guns N' Roses and Kid Rock both like Jack Daniels.
So reading and hearing of Musician's love of Jack Daniel's piqued my interest. For a While I didn't consume any liquor that was higher than 10% Alcohol by volume, so Jack Daniel's was out of the question. But when I turned 22 I started to have that desire to experiment with Liquor that happens with most people at ages 17-18. Granted, I drank before I was 21 (That's the United States drinking age - wish it was 18) but I Never had the urge to try harder liquor - until recently.
I ventured a personal guess that Jack Daniel's might taste good on the rocks Because I figured there are some liquors that don't taste good that way like Peppermint Schnapps which my dad loved (R.I.P). Jack Daniels isn't one of them.
Bottle - Is made of glass and is circular shaped at the spout, and square at the base. I love the trademark Black Label of Jack Daniel's whiskey because Black is my number one color. The reason for that being I love Heavy Metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Sports teams like the Baltimore Ravens and Boston Bruins (The two have black uniforms). There is one big label which covers the front and two of the other sides to the four faced square bottle. The Front label looks good with the printed Jack Daniel's logo and in cursive the word Tennesee. And the words Sour Mash and Whiskey in print. On the back label is a picture of to the man the Whiskey is named for, Jack Daniel. The Signature of Jack Daniel is branded on the glass.
Jack Daniel's is very prestigious in the world of Liquors. I was watching the show "Made In America" on the Travel Channel with host John Ratzenberger and one of the stops was the distillery.
Jack Daniel's is charcoal mellowed and stored in white oak barrels. It is a completely natural product (For the record I like Un-natural products too) consisting of pure spring water, yeast and 100% whole natural grains: corn, rye, and barley malt.
I looked forward to my first sip of Jack Daniel's for a while. I went to the Liquor store and bought a 750 mL, the medium sized bottle for $20.99. There are small and large sizes also. The latter I know for certain exists.
Jack Daniel's own description, "Sour Mash" sounded appealing, but I was in for a surprise.
Percent Alcohol - 40 by volume (80 Proof).
The Color - Reddish Brown. I like the color, it enhances the presentation.
The Taste - All along I expected a bitter/tart flavor because of the term "Sour Mash". What I got was a sweet flavor to it that Jim Beam Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey doesn't have. I like them both the same however. There is nothing sour to the taste, which got me thinking - the "Sour Mash" monniker is misleading. I tasted no yeast or bread. There is a smoky aftertaste that is satisfying on the rocks or straight up. For My Brother, Jack Daniel's goes down smoother than Jim Beam, but personally they go down exactly the same. The closest comparision I can make to Jack Daniel's in the soda category would be Cola Champagne because of the sweetness, A "sweeter than similar products in it's class."
The Nose - It smells the way candy tastes, if that makes any sense. If you pour the liquor first and then add rocks, you can smell an immediate difference. I've also done the other method of adding rocks to the glass first. Jack Daniel's smells better on the rocks.
Ways to Consume: I prefer on the rocks because it tastes better at a colder temperature. I've drinken it straight-up - with less satisfaction. Another method of consuming is people mix it with Cola, similar to Captain Morgan's and Bacardi. I don't know how the combination of these drinks and cola tastes.
Jack Daniel's is a perfect liquor for when friends come over or if you're alone. Great for Parties too. I don't recommend it to quench dry mouthes however, for those cases I'd say drink soda, Twisted Tea, Mike's Hard Lemonade, Smirnoff Ice or similar malt liquor.
