three_ster's Full Review: Tetris Plus for PlayStation 1
After I purchased a sony playstation game console, I decided that I was going to purchase the game of "tetris" for it. After being involved with computer game for quite a while, I am what you might call a "tetris junkie." I can sit there and play for hours, just trying to beat my newest high score. Once I beat it, I want to top it again. It can go like this for hours, if I do not have someone to pull me away, or I have a pre-scheduled event I need to be at. So, when I thought about games that I would want to get for my playstation, Tetris was at the top of the list.
I went to Walmart to get this game, and when I saw "tetris plus", I fell under the assumption that it would be the same old tetris, but there would be different options as to how I could play it. I was some-what discouraged to learn, that the old tetris had nothing to do with this new game. Instead of being the same game I had grown to love, Sony had made some "updates" to it, to make it seem more new-age.
The basis of the game of tetris, is to make different shapes of blocks fit into straight lines across the screen. Each different shape is itself made of different blocks, that can be turned or rotated until you get it the way you like. As the pieces drop down from the top, you have a few seconds to place it. When you get to a total of 10 lines, you would advance to the next level in the old tetris. What this meant, is that the pieces would start dropping faster.
With each level of increase, the pieces drop faster and faster, until you run out of places to place the pieces. Each time you get a full straight line across, it is cleared, and all the pieces above it drop down one row. The difference between the old and new tetris, is that now the levels are based on how many blocks you use. SO, after a certain number of blocks, the pieces start coming down faster and faster.
The differences do not stop there though. The problem with the new version, is the background. With each level, you get a new background picture behind the playing filed. Some of these are very distracting and make it quite hard to tell where the pieces are at times. It even goes as far as hurting the eyes if you have to look at a given level for an extended period of time.
The only good thing about this game, is that you can play what is called a puzzle level, where you start with pieces already on the screen and you try and fill in the lines. It is somewhat fun itself, but still lacks the excitement of the first version.
The worst part about this game? There is no longer any 2-player competition. Where in the first version, you could play against an opponent at the same time, this version only lets you have 2 players on a split screen. No longer can I have a competition with my friends, because now Tetris has become like solitare where you must beat your own scores.
If you have to purchase a puzzle game then try this, but if you are looking for anything competitive, or have played tetris before, then I urge you to avoid this one, because it does a grave injustice to its forefather.
