Amazon.com is a powerhouse, plain and simple. I have been ordering from them for over 8 years and have NEVER had a bad experience. Several people have complained about customer service, not receiving packages on time, etc, etc. The first thing to remember with any on-line service is that you have to watch product availability. If merchandise is listed with a 2-3 day availability, it means that it will take that long to obtain the item. That's NOT counting the shipping method selected. People choose items with a longer avail and think if they select Next Day Air they'll get their item the next day. Additionally, when ordering a gift for someone, you should always plan ahead. ANYTHING could happen with a package delivery; natural disasters, backlog with UPS or the post office, product availability issues. Amazon's website is so easy to use, that if you know how to read, you should never have to contact customer service. If by some chance you can't read, you can have a literate friend or family member e-mail them. The 800 number used to be listed on the site, but in an effort to reduce the number of mindless phone contacts such as "Could you tell me what is on the cover of the book, I can't see it that well." it was removed in favor of boosting e-mail communication. It's much more cost effective to reply with a few written words than to have a fifteen minute conversation regarding a dust jacket. The number is no big mystery, ask them for it by e-mail and they'll be more than happy to give it to you. Additionally, the website was also revamped around the same time the number was removed, to make it EVEN EASIER to use.
