| gpowell's Full Review: Rock Bridge Memorial State Park |
I discovered Rock Bridge one day while driving from Jefferson City back to I-70, saw the sign and stopped. It was a very pleasant discovery. There is a natural rock bridge over a running stream. A short hike leads under the bridge, around some sink holes (one of which has access to a cave) and back over the top of the bridge in a loop. It's a short hike and I highly recommend it.
A brief note about the cave: To get to the cave you descend from the trail down a high set of stairs. At the bottom you walk into a shallow underground stream and into the opening. A few feet in you can look up through another sink hole and see people high above you.
At this point the cave goes in both directions (following the stream). To the right is the main portion of the cave which is closed with out a guided tour. But to the left is a very short section which you can see with a flashlight. I've taken several friends to see it that have never been in an unfinished cave and they really enjoyed it. Frequently we see bats even in this short section.
I highly recommend this park as a great place to take your kids or for anyone passing through Columbia on I-70 that has a few hours to explore.
There are other trails in the park and they are 'okay' but nothing spectacular (IMHO).
