| drdevience's Full Review: Dave & Buster's |
One of the scariest things in the world for a restaurant has got to be playing host to a bunch of rowdy reviewers. ESPN Zone pulled it off well in New York on Sept 13, 2003. Jillian's Boston sucked wind in July 2004. I'm happy to say that Dave & Busters (Nov 13, 2004) was the best so far.
Five of us miscreants decided to join up and have lunch before the meeting. Ed Grover, Caroline and her charming friend Gene, Tom Barnes, and moi. The place we had intended to go had an hour and a half wait, so we just walked our way down the road and decided to have lunch where the meet was since we would be reviewing it for sure anyway. Always nice to check out the service without them knowing you are reviewers. heh. Sneak attack!
We were greeted at the door and directed to the second floor dining room which is much nicer than I had it imagined it would be. Very nice woods and cloth napkins. They like to refer to the decor as "casual elegance." We were seated immediately. It would be good to note that since this floor has a big ol' bar, you can smoke here... so at least Chicago turned out to have one thing to recommend it. heh.
We were seated immediately and our drinks were brought promptly. We started off with an order of Tempura Mushrooms which we passed around the table a few times. Yeah, there was that much. Now, they had no menus that we could take home but were assured it was on their website. Well, it is.. but it's a PDF file, rather than just opening on a webpage. grrr argh. Sooooo I do not know exact prices here, but I'm thinking those awesomely tasty mushrooms were around $7. The batter was very light and cooked just right. Not sure what the dipping sauce was but I think it had a bit of horseradish in it and I loved it.
For lunch I had been craving catfish and there it was! Booya. I ordered the dinner portion for around $12. This was like 2 or 3 really big filets with tarter sauce and french fries. Yanno, it was a lot better than I expected. I enjoyed it a great deal and could not finish it all.
Tom went with Lacey's Chicken and I believe it was about the same price as mine and was also from the dinner menu. Another hit. Ed stuck with a Garden Salad for around 4 bucks figuring (correctly) that we would have tons of food for free at the meeting. He was the smart one! I don't recall what Gene and Caroline ordered at all.. give me a break, we were gabbing like crazy. I do not recall any complaints from either of them though. There were several things on the lunch menu for around $6-7 and a whole section just for burgers.
Service was very good for this little expedition, and continued with Ryan in the meeting room which was just on the other side of the bar from us.
We were given two big tables to sit and eat at (like anyone sits at these things for long) and a big ol' buffet table filled with many wonders. I spied some mini-quiches that certain parties could not keep away from which tells me they must have been yummy, there were some sticks with beef and some with chicken and I think I saw some ribs in there, along with a vegetable tray for any Vegetarians who showed up (Garrett learns fast..)
No complaints reached my ears on any of this array of scrumptious delights, and I can absolutely attest to how wonderful Ryan was in the face of us crazy people. this guy was always smiling and I swear once I asked him for a sprite and then wandered out into the bar area for a few minutes and he actually found me! This guy didn't miss a trick.
Ok cool on the food and service, but what else is here? Well, some really fun stuff, that's what! They have a huge arcade here with all manner of great games. (This is where the bathrooms are hidden, by the way, and are very clean.) They also have an area with all these egg-lookin' thangs that turned out to be Virtual Reality shooters. How cool is that? How it works is you buy a game card (or get Epinions to spring for one) and it keeps track of everything so you don't have to keep juggling quarters. I like it.
Besides the arcades and VR stuff they have pool tables and ShuffleBoard here and there, along with those are the Big One Crane (Navigate a giant crane in a room-sized glass case filled with massive prizes,) Derby Owners Club (Ride your horse to victory gives you thrilling head to head competition), and Daytona USA (Experience the rush of taking the pole at Daytona).***
So yeah. 5 stars and a hearty Good Job to Dave & Busters from me. Good food, great service, lots of booze, and tons of fun.
