Amazon.com has been a wonderful and trustworthy Internet retailer. They are one of the only web retailers to offer free shipping for orders of more than $25 and their prices are normally very competitive if not cheaper when compared to other trustworthy retailers.
I have had only a couple of problems to report. When I tried to purchase a vacuum, it was sent by FedEx and the FedEx returned the product saying my address did not exist (the address was 8 years old). Unfortunately I purchased the vacuum during a promotional period and Amazon.com was not willing to extend the promotion for me even though the error was with their delivery. Since the promotion was no longer honored the vacuum was cheaper at Costco.
The second problem was with an Amazon Rebate for a Sprint PCS phone. They had supposedly lost my rebate; thankfully I sent it certified mail! Once I contacted them about the problem, they sent out the rebate check.
Besides these couple of instances, delivery has always been timely and shipped earlier than the estimated shipping time. They have distribution centers all over the states. When I lived in Reno, NV there was a center in Fallon making delivery on most items overnight. Now I live in Las Vegas and when I ordered a cable modem it had arrived at my house before they even said they had shipped it (with in 2 days). It was sent from Phoenix, making shipping still very fast!
Customer service is always willing to help, but you can only contact them by an email form. If the form is broken there is no email address or telephone number to fall back on.
My suggestion is to shop the deals. Prices will usually be 10% cheaper than competitors, but if they are running a sale/promotion or rebate - they can cut their price by 50% or more. I never buy anything with out first checking the Amazon price!
They also offer a lot of useful tools and their web site learns your interests to help you find items that best fit your needs.
Real consumers can't ignore all that Amazon has provided to the competitive retail market.
