Amazon.com represents my, and most other online users, first foray into the wonderful world of online shopping. No longer do you have to deal with long lines, lousy "live" customer service and ridicolous sales tax on EVERY item you may purchase. Okay, we probably should pay a little sales tax, and eventually all online purchases will have sales tax, but let's enjoy this tax holiday as long as we can. The only caveat to online shopping was the dreaded $3-$4 minimum for shipping and handling, but now that is being phased out for all orders over 25.00 on most sites.
I ordered my first book at Amazon at the end of 1997, and since then I have been overly impressed by their customer service, prices and relatively quick shipping time (even for the free shipping). I have found that most products arrive in my home in New York City within 3-4 business days. In Manhattan, they are now experimenting with same day, fedex style shipping on certain orders where the user pays the normal shipping fee (usually about 3.95 plus another dollar per item). While this is not as fast as going to your corner store, it is pretty quick and you will enjoy the savings.
In the beginning, Amazon was only about books. Today, Amazon's book selection is so large that it will rival any major libraries card catalog, plus you can read real person's reviews of each book. On political book this is a negative, since one's political leanings tend to skew ratings and infiltrate each review. For other books, this is a blessing that can definitely help you decide whether to purchase.
One of Amazon's problems is they expanded into new product areas a little to quickly. Eventually, they cut out non-profitable areas, and now they are able to deliver the products they can handle at the best prices possible.
I have had several dealings with customer service and have always been impressed. Once I was only sent volume 2 of an audio book and they were nice enough to send a return mailing packet to return it in...service with a smile. Amazingly, you will get an answer back from the company within 2 hours, a time period unheard of in the online world (try getting that from buy.com!)
Today, Amazon is selling Gardening products, music, they do auctions, office suppplies, its just amazing. they have aligned themselves with Toys-R-Us, Staples and J&R music world. Their z-shops (little boutiques online users can set up) have a guarantee policy that forces sellers to make good on their sales. Their auctions are also great, though I usually use Ebay when I want to use them. I would estimate I have spent close to $2,000 dollars at Amazon over the past 6 1/2 years and have always been satisfied with their delivery time and customer service.
THEY ARE NOT THE ABSOLUTE CHEAPEST IN ONLINE SHOPPING, BUT THEY ARE THE BEST IN TERMS OF SERVICE.
