I am an occasional shopper on Amazon, and although i think there are some great things about the site, it always ultimately leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
Great Variety
I love the selection at Amazon. While they may not have everything I want, they do have a lot of things, and usually at decent prices. It's nice to be able to find obscure CDs and the latest cell phone at the same place. And I like their used marketplace.
Reliability
There is something nice about the fact that they are such a large company. Although their prices are sometimes a bit higher than smaller online companies, it seems worth it to me because, especially if I'm buying something relatively expensive like electronics, there's less of a chance of being scammed.
Delivery
I hate Amazon delivery. I love that a lot of items are available with free delivery. But it rarely comes as quickly as promised, or as quickly as you would think. For example, I currently have an order that has been awaiting shipment for 3 days, and it said on the web page when I ordered that it would ship within 24 hours. Once shipped, things usually come quickly enough, but it's really frustrating waiting when I don't even have a tracking number. If I can't have instant gratification for my impulse purchases, I at least need to be able to track their arrival. Last year I ordered a European CD that was supposed to ship within 1 week. There were some other items in the shipment as well, and I opted to have them shipped together to minimize the shipping cost. Well, Amazon waited 2 weeks before giving up on waiting for the CD and sending me my other items separately, and the CD didn't ship for over 2 months. I can understand that some things might be out of print, or in limited supply, or not in stock, so that it takes a while to order them. But I think they should make that clear on the product page, so that I can plan accordingly.
Anyway, this concludes my little rant. If you can stand to wait for your things to be shipped, Amazon's great, especially considering the selection and the security of dealing with a known company. But if you're like me, the wait can be agonizing.
