I have ordered from Amazon.com for about 4 years. For the most part I have been pretty happy with them although I have found items to be cheaper elsewhere. I have tried to take advantage of their free shipping offers whenever possible.
However, on January 28th of 2004 my amazon.com account was broken into by changing my password. Amazon DOES NOT reset or wipe out your credit card or payment information like many other sites do. To make a very long story short, over $2,000 worth of merchandise was ordered from one of their zshops. Fortunately, as this was happening I was online and caught it so all charges were immediately reversed. To change a password on Amazon, the person only needs to know some very basic information that can be gleemed from other sites. I requested the IP address that was used when placing the order. first they acted like they didn't know what i was talking about. Then they told me my credit card company had to request it. AFter a few days my credit card company got thru to them gave them the info they requested and then responded to my credit cards fraud division that I would need to have a law enforcement official request this information. The zshop that the merchandise was purchased through was very helpful and they told me they had been having at least 5 other cases of fraudulent charges through Amazon.com and they would not be using them anymore. They also shared that, they too, were getting the run around. I had to do a google.com search to obtain a 1-800 number for Amazon. It is listed no where on their website and my credit card company actually called me and requested the number.
I no longer feel my information is safe when ordering from Amazon.com.
