| chilliebrady's Full Review: Johnson's Baby Soothing Vapor Cream |
Chillie's Addiction
I love lotions, powders, perfumes, candles and such! This is not to mention my obsession with hair care products of all sorts. Not surprisingly, when I saw Johnson's Soothing Vapor Baby Cream, I was interested. Aromatherapy for my baby?
Sure, why not?
What's it Supposed to do?
The idea of Johnson's Soothing Vapor Baby Cream is that it helps soothe baby's nasal congestion while leaving her skin soft. The front of the product claims that it "provides soothing comfort for babies". The fragrance, rich with eucalyptus, menthol, and rosemary, is supposed to provide aromatherapy for the wee ones when their noses are filled with guck (or something like that, right?) This sounded like a great idea to me because my ten-month-old is a bear when she has a cold and can't breath right. I don't necessarily blame her because I truly hate having a cold too!
How do you use it? What did I think?
Johnson's Soothing Vapor Baby Cream comes in a 2oz tube and is a slightly thick, white lotion. The directions suggest that you gently massage small amount of cream into baby's chest and neck once or twice daily. Specifically, you should NOT apply to baby's face or nostrils. AS IF! This stuff stinks! I would not dream of putting it on Emily's face or her nostrils. She would probably blow her lid. It smells exactly like a cough drop to me with a VERY strong undertone of rosemary. I would not characterize the fragrance as pleasant at all; however, I would agree that it clears one's nasal passages pretty well. I applied a bit to Emily's chest, and I noticed immediately that she was breathing a bit better. Unfortunately, it did not last long. As far as moisturizing her skin, I didn't notice anything spectacular. Her skin is pretty darned soft to begin with. She's a baby!
I think Johnson's Soothing Vapor Baby Cream does what it claims to do. It helps provide some comfort and clear up baby's congestion. In our experience, however, it did not last long. Also, the smell is pretty gross. There is something wrong with a baby lotion that smells like a Halls cough drop!
Side Note
I should mention that I tried a bit of Johnson's Soothing Vapor Baby Cream on myself on Sunday. I had a horrible sinus headache and decided to give it a whirl. I noticed a somewhat cool sensation on the area I applied the product. I also noticed that I was breathing a bit better, and my sinus headache felt slightly better. Unfortunately, once again, the relief was short lived. Given that I am an adult, and this product is intended for babies, I'm not sure this should matter. In any case, I found it noteworthy that the relief for me (and it seemed for Emily) was relatively short lived.
What's in this Stuff...and How Much??
Ingredients (from packaging): Water, Propylene Glycol, Myristyl Myristate, Fragrance, Glyceryl Stearate, Stearic Acid, Oleic Acid, Polysorbate 61, Stearoxytrimethylsilane (and) Stearyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Isopropyl Palmitate, Sorbitan Stearate, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben, Cetyl Alcohol, Stearyl Alcohol, Beeswax Synthetic, Benzyl Alcohol, Acrylic Poymer, Butylated Hydroxtoluene
The 2oz tube of this product set me back about four bucks. I thought this was a bit expensive, considering how little you get of the actual product. I suppose, though, if you only use it once or twice a day, when your baby has a cold, it might be worth the money.
Warning
This product is intended for babies six months or older. It is not to be used for younger infants. More importantly, you should not use without consulting a doctor "if your child has asthma or allergies or if there is a family history of either."
Would I buy this again?
Possibly. The fragrance is pretty stinky, but it provides a brief comfort for my stuffy baby. I might purchase this if it were on sale or if I had a coupon. Otherwise, I would probably skip it or try another similar (less expensive) product.
