Only as an External

by nad_masters, Dec 09 '07
Pros: None
Cons: Slow, firmware update failed, cannot use as enclosure
The Seagate FreeAgent 500 GB hard drive was on sale at Best Buy one day for $99 so I decided to pick it up. I actually needed 2 internal hard drives, but the external ones were on sale for the same price as an internal drive, so I decided to purchase 2 ...

500 Gigabytes of Naked Celebrity Photos!

by shopaholic_man, Jul 26 '08
Pros: lots of space
Cons: transferring large files takes up time.
You can store whatever you want on this Seagate 500 Gigabyte External Hardrive. My computer only has 120 gigabyte harddrive, which by today's standards is pretty small. It fills up fast. What's in the Box? 500 gigabytes of naked celebrity ...

Sweet Affordable Storage From A Trusted Name

by vemartin, Apr 05 '08
Pros: Great performance, attractive slim design; affordable; loads of space.
Cons: None
Can one ever have enough storage space? I say no, one can always find a use for space and with the prices for hard drive the only thing that seems to be dropping these days, it’s easy to grab an affordable external hard drive for not a lot of green. ...

A reliable and sturdy product

by xenoranger, Jan 11 '08
Pros: Sturdy
Reliable
Lots of Storage
Cons: Don't like the Power Supply
In the world of portable media, it's important to have the storage for whatever files you have. In this particular case, I upgraded from an old Seagate 40GB drive to this newer FreeAgent 500GB. So far, I haven't been disappointed. First, I've shot ...

No problems so far...

by akazgea, Jan 05 '08
Pros: Quick installation, cool running, reliable connections and data transfers, and good warranty conditions
Cons: One-way positioning
Even though I am usually an external drive builder rather than a buyer of the drive itself, after seeing very good deals on the drive and the trust I have on Seagate brand, I decided to try the Seagate FreeAgent Drive. I was able to install the drive ...

Good Drive As a Backup Device

by uhda, Jan 14 '08
Pros: Easy to setup and use.
Cons: Need to improve the provided backup software.
Even after reading about some of the bad experiences some fellow users have had on this product, I still decided to get one as I needed a drive to backup all my documents/music/videos etc, and the price was decent ($125). Connecting the drive was a ...

Questionable Reliability

by japperific, Nov 09 '07
Pros: 5 year warranty, Elegant design
Cons: Unstable, Slow transfer speed, Lack of customer service
I bought the Seagate Free Agent Desktop 500GB external hard drive approximately two months ago. It originally comes formatted in the NTFS file format, which is not really conducive to transferring large chunks of files. FAT32 is a much better file ...

Pros: Fast, quiet easy to use.
Cons: Have not found any yet
The Seagate FreeAgent 500GB external hard drive is perfect for doing backups as well as using it for additional file storage. I purchased my FreeAgent from newegg.com about a month ago. The software installation started right up the first time I ...

Excellent Runs in Background, no hassles
by dragondoodle,Mar 21 '08
Pros: Small, works in the background, easy usb connect, easy drag and drop to add files.
Cons: Does not automatically backup desktop files only from "My Documents" file.
I got mine from buy.com about three months ago, I set it to run every morning at 5am, so I don't have to mess with it. I check to see if it has been doing it's job and it does it. It is great to have it.
I will note that if you keep a lot of your documents on your desktop that you may have to add them manually. I did. Maybe there is some way to get it to that but I did not see it in the instructions so I just go in from time to time and add them. It is as easy as pie to add anything, just a click and drag, and you're done.
Also I purchased the 250 gig instead of the 500 because I would rather have more backup drives in case one goes down.
This drive is small and since it works with a simple usb, I can easily unplug and use it to back up my laptop.
I am happy so far. Also Seagate gives a five year warranty on this model -at least it did when I made my purchase.

Seagate FreeAgent not very reliable
by randomizer,Oct 06 '07
Pros: Nice price, good support
Cons: unreliable
I've had this Seagate FreeAgent for three months. Initially, it worked fine, but lately has been having an intermittant fault where the $Mft file doesn't write properly. That blocks access to all the files on the drive, but I haven't lost any data. I'm in contact with Seagate to get tech support. I'd go with another drive if you don't want the hassle.

Seagate Free Agent Failure
by jjirwinq,Jun 26 '07
Pros: Excellent customer service.
Cons: Initial failure leaves a lasting impression.
My 500 GB Free Agent also failed about a week after I first got it. My problem was with the interface controller, it would periodically shutdown and then restart. I also had corrupted data, lost a few GB of data. I arranged to send it back to Seagate, they sent me a replacement drive in about a week. The second one is working fine.

Buyer Beware
by rwwk,May 27 '07
Pros: Great drive in theory.
Cons: Power supply fails quickly.
After I backed up 250GB of data, the power supply failed. I have had this drive for less than a week. Seagate's podcast site also lists a customer who had the same failure. This is still a new drive to the market, so I don't think this problem is being reported yet. Buyer beware. Otherwise, this is a great drive.

Fantastic Product!
by henrytfordjr,Oct 02 '07
Pros: It's very, very small!
Cons: None.
I've had my Seagate FreeAgent for several months now and have had no problems whatever. I'm running Vista Home Premium a new Dell Dimension E521 and the drive set itself up so fast I never even saw it set itself up. The unit sits on my desk and is underneath a fan and A/C outlet so it never gets too hot. You just plug it in, forget about it and use it as simply another drive on the system. The orange horizontal light is an added plus. This is a simple drive and not for those who want lots of bells and whistles, though. But for simple storage it's great. I would buy it again in a heartbeat and encourage others to purchase one!

The Neptune washer of Hard Drives
by vzqk50,Jan 08 '08
Pros: Cost, Capacity
Cons: Reliability, Size, Weight
I needed a good reliable drive to keep my plethora of computers backed up. When I found this SEAGATE 500gb drive I thought I would be set for a very long time. I got the first one home and started backing stuff up. It was slow, but I could afford to set it and forget it. Turns out though, it was just like my Neptune washer. The sucker died withing two weeks. I took it back to the store and they gave me another one. That was in October. Here we are in January, and guess what... DOA. Very suddenly too! The first sign of a possible problem was 5 days ago. A single file showed up as corrupted. Then over the course of the next few days nothing discernible happened until last night. I tried to watch a movie that was stored on it and it kept stopping like it was not feeding the data fast enough. I copied it to my Laptop and finished watching it, then after that POOF - I could not read a thing from the drive. BEWARE! Just because something is a trusted name, does not make it reliable.
