2008 Ford Escape: enough of an upgrade?

by mkaresh
Apr 16 '07 - Updated Apr 19 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Greatly improved interior, quieter and smoother ride, updated exterior, lower sticker price
Cons: Carryover antiquated powertrain, numb steering, handling less sharp than before
The Bottom Line: Merely adequate, by design.

There was a time, not terribly long ago, when it seemed Ford could do no wrong. It had the best-selling car, the best-selling truck, and three other models in the top ten. When it entered the compact car-based SUV fray back in 2000--years ahead of ...

2008 Escape – Cosmetic Surgery for the Aging Diva

by jcare
Sep 04 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No

Pros: Comfortable ride with a touch of toughness. Good offroad for its size.
Cons: fewer goodies for more dollars than competition. lousy mileage.
The Bottom Line: A rapidly aging product, which cannot be fixed by cosmetics. Look elsewhere unless you're getting a great deal.

The Top Line I drove a 2001 Escape for over five years and 110,000 miles – and I loved it. Of course, there were a few things about the vehicle that can drive you crazy – more later. Every year I rent a current model for business ...

Great car, if you can get your hands on one

by dgeesaman
Jan 01 '08 - Updated Apr 29 '08

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fuel economy, visibility, comfort, tax credit.
Cons: Ford wasn't building them fast enough in 07 and ignored how dealers mistreated buyers
The Bottom Line: Buying one is hard enough that I wonder whether Ford wants to sell this vehicle at all. Which is concerning, considering how good the Ford Escape Hybrid really is.

My wife picked up here Ford Escape Hybrid in November. It's the FWD version with leather interior. Driving experience: The FEH is a nicely sized vehicle for four and cargo. It's definitely taller than a crossover SUV, so on entry it's ...

2008 Escape Hybrid: A Great Car - So Far

by seateacher
Aug 14 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Economy, price, ride, style, predicted reliability
Cons: Plastic interior, low horsepower
The Bottom Line: I think I made a smart choice when balancing economy, price, reliability, and style. In five years, I hope I feel the same.

I feel like I'm taking a risk with this car, because Ford has not always had great long term reliability or high quality fit/finish. But the CR reliability reviews over the last couple years have been positive on the Escape Hybrid, so I made the leap and ...

On A Hybrid High, Baby!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: QUIET as a mouse. Great new interior. Good power and acceleration. 30+ mpg in town.
Cons: No tow package. No entertainment center option.
The Bottom Line: I recommend the Escape Hybrid to anyone who wants the flexibility of an SUV and wants to save on gas as well.

I just purchased an '08 Escape Hybrid and it is a cool little SUV. Quiet as a mouse on the road and if you're not a leadfoot, it will get you 34 mpg puttering in stop and go in town (that was my first tank). I am on my third tank of gas and I am ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Safe, comfortable, affordable
Cons: slow to accelerate
The Bottom Line:

This is a car you can be confident in driving, know it's safe for your children.

I had looked at the Escape when the 2005 model was coming out and couldn't find a competant sales person so ended up with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. With the new lease I didn't bother looking at the Escape until my husband asked me to humor him. It's a good ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great mileage the passenger seat folds completely flat
It corners very well.
Cons: Steering radius makes u turns a little difficult- Passenger head rests make backing up difficult.
The Bottom Line: Its an SUV but drives like a car. Gas efficient,it handles very well.  Very zippy. Great price and you get a lot for your money.

I have owned my 2008 Escape XLT since Sept of 07, I had to replace my 2002 Explorer at the time, and I had grave misgivings about going to a smaller car.  But after driving it for a year, I have found that the vehicle is an economical car to drive I ...

Pros: Great fuel economy User friendly controls Roomy Price Easy to park
Cons: Braking system Cosmetic Rear Bumper
The Bottom Line: If you are in the market for an affordable SUV with good gas mileage checkout the Escape.

My husband and I purchased ours last year and June and we have been extremely pleased with our Escape. We chose the 4 cylinder XLT model. It gets great gas mileage-about 24 to 27 on the open highway and about 19 to 23 in city traffic driving. The ...

Pros: Sirius radio (love it!) Quieter than previous model
Cons: Bit cheaper interior, no better gas mileage than before
The Bottom Line: Good SUV, plenty of space for us and good towing for our use. Great purchase.

This is my 2nd Escape limited. The first was the 2005 which we leased. At the time we had reviewed everything available on the market and really felt comfortable in this one. Visibility was great, super easy to park (work parking is extremely awkward ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: A good vehicle for the price.
Cons: I wouldn't buy this vehicle if you're looking for a lot of space.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this vehicle if you're wanting an SUV but don't really need the space or the gas guzzling of the larger models.

I fell in love with this vehicle 6 months ago and bought it that day. I am still loving it everyday. It is a big step up as far as looks go compared to the later models. The interior looks very modern and feels durable. The exterior looks more like the ...

Jul 04 '08

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Fuel economy, styling, comfort, reliability.
Cons: Not quite as powerful as V-6 version.
The Bottom Line: Thumbs up. All the comfort and room you need plus very good gas mileage.

After owning three previous regular fuel Escapes, we ordered a new 2008 Escape Hybrid 4WD last May and took delivery in September. Since then we have put about 12,000 trouble-free miles on it. Ours has all the standard features plus leather seating, ...

2008 Ford Escape XLS FWD - Very Basic

Mar 03 '08 - Updated Mar 10 '08

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Longer warranties; Roomy cargo; Remote control opening of rear window.
Cons: Cheaper look & feels interior; Only 1 interior lighting for cabin; So-So gas mileage.
The Bottom Line: It's a fairly roomy small SUV at an affordable price. Interior is a bit lacking but still a nice looking vehicle.

Got this compact SUV since December 2007. It has same engine as Mazda Tribute but more AMERICAN look & feel inside. It also has longer warranties and better safety ratings than Tribute at roughly same price (with year end incentives, of course). ...

2008 Ford Escape - Nothing Special Here
by antonin
Feb 15 '08
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 1.0 Recommended: No
Pros: - Seats are comfortable. Legroom is good. After six months, no significant mechanical issues.
Cons: - Dated powertrain impacts fuel economy. Driver visibility is poor in bad weather.
First new domestic purchase after a succession of new Hondas and Mazdas. Most recent previous vehicle was a CRV.
We purchased a 2008 Escape Limited. The dealer experience was acceptable, if a bit simplistic. Upon delivery, the vehicle needed to have immediate work in order to remove the effect of rail dust.

The power train (engine and transmission) is definitely showing its age. I only wish we could have waited until the 2009's came out. An extra gear in the transmission would be very helpful, and fuel economy is no better than average.

My main complaint is with the windshield wipers. Ford has gone with a new "springless" wiper for 2008 that regularly leaves gaps. Most troublesome is the fact that aftermarket wipers (including winter blades) are not available. Don't take this truck out in heavy rain or snow if you want to actually see the road.

08 is great!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: quiet, good 4X4 response, solid feel
Cons: hate the wipers, arm rests to hard.
I have enjoyed my 2008 Escape, the road noise is less than my Taurus was and the ride is not real stiff. It has done me well in the snow, automatic 4X4 is not my favorite but seems to work well. Center arm rest is rock hard, long drives make my elbow sore. I have the 6 cylinder engine and it has good power, the steering is tight and the unit does not wander on the road. Interior colors need to be darker to hide the dirt.
Center console is nice but the lower compartment is difficult to access while driving. Cloth on rear seat backs is low quality,it seems to be shedding a lot. It is the same as the carpet on the rear floor. Tool storage under the rear deck is nice, forward compartment is hard to get at. Door thresholds are a little thin when you kick off the snow from your shoes it sounds weak. Gas mileage is around 19MPG. Only issue thus far is the poor wiper design. Love the dash set up, radio is kind of overgrown.

2008 Escape LTD. 4x4

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Interior and Exterior styling, excellent fuel mileage, good power.
Cons: Difficult to find aftermarket parts.
I was drawn back to Ford by the new 2008 styling of the Escape. I did not expect much out of it, just a 'Cuteute' all wheel drive. But I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed from the moment I climbed into the drivers seat. This vehicle feels like a much bigger truck than it actually is, but still maneuvers like a small compact. It has good power, excellent handling for an SUV, awesome 'creature comforts' including dual climate control, backup sensor, Head lights that come on automatically in the rain, SIRIUS radio, plus much much more. I also didn't expect to obtain such good fuel mileage, I am averaging 26 MPG with city driving, and 30 MPG on the freeway at 80 MPH. The ride is comfortable and quiet, good visibility, comfortable seats, and a great sound system. Ford could put a bigger V6 and a 6 speed auto and they would have a truly unbeatable compact SUV.
